How to play Klondike Solitaire
Klondike is the solitaire most of us learned at the kitchen table, and later on a computer. The goal is simple: build four piles, one for each suit, from Ace up to King. When all 52 cards are home, you win.
The layout
- Seven columns (the tableau). The first column has one card, the last has seven. Only the bottom card of each column starts face up.
- The stock in the top left corner holds the other 24 cards. Tap it to turn cards over onto the waste pile next to it.
- Four foundations in the top right. Each one starts with an Ace and grows by suit: Ace, 2, 3, all the way to King.
Moving cards
- In the columns, build down in alternating colors: a red 9 goes on a black 10, a black 4 on a red 5.
- You can move a whole run of face-up cards together, as long as the top card of the run fits where it lands.
- When you uncover a face-down card, it turns over by itself.
- Only a King (or a run that starts with a King) can go into an empty column.
- Drag a card where you want it, or just tap it: the card jumps to the best place it can go.
Draw one or draw three
With Draw 1 you turn the stock one card at a time, which makes most games winnable. Draw 3 turns three cards and only the top one is playable, so you have to plan which cards you will reach. You can go through the stock as many times as you like in both modes. Change it any time under Settings; a new game starts with your choice.
Tips that win more games
- Uncover face-down cards first. A move that turns over a hidden card is almost always better than one that does not.
- Work on the longest columns. They hide the most cards, so free them early.
- Do not empty a column without a King ready. An empty column is only useful when you have a King to put there.
- Keep low cards moving to the foundations, but think twice before sending up a 5 or 6 you may still need to hold a 4 or 5 in the columns.
- Use Undo to learn. There is no penalty. Try a line, and if it goes nowhere, take it back.
Today's deal
Every day there is one Daily Deal, the same shuffle for every player. Solve it in as few moves as you can and see how you compare with everyone else who played today. Your first finish of the day is the one that counts.
Questions
Can every game be won? No. Some shuffles cannot be solved even with perfect play, especially in Draw 3. If you are stuck, use Hint, try Undo, or deal again.
Do I need an account? No. Your games, streak and settings stay in this browser.
Why do cards go up by themselves at the end? When every card is face up and the stock is empty, the game is already won, so we finish it for you.
